A journey to the heart of the life and work of “La Más Grande”. Recreated spaces, dresses, photographs, personal objects, awards and an auditorium that reveal how the daughter of a humble shoemaker conquered the world with her voice.

Rocío Jurado Collection
This exhibition centre is organised around several thematic spaces, allowing a journey to the heart of the life and work of Rocío Jurado. It is a rediscovery of the artist and of her personality.
Through the different sections and elements that make up the collection, we learn how the daughter of a humble shoemaker became a star in just a few years, and how her prestige grew over time until she reached the very top. Recreated spaces, dresses, photographs, personal objects, awards, multimedia elements and an auditorium are just some of the assets on display.
Covering the immense musical, cultural, historical and social legacy that Rocío left behind is certainly impossible. The tour allows visitors to get an idea of the magnitude reached by an artist who, from her beginnings, managed to conquer the world with her voice and her overwhelming personality.
She was natural, approachable and affectionate with the public; committed to her time and to people in need; open with her people and her town; cosmopolitan, determined and irreducible in the face of adversity.
Rocío was a woman who broke moulds and whom clichés cannot describe. For this reason the collection connects with the very depths of her being, showing her not only as she is popularly known, but as she truly was: a woman who marked an era in music and who symbolises the revolution of a culturally rich century that evolved at dizzying speed.

The beginnings of “The Awards’ Girl”
This section outlines Rocío’s beginnings: her life in Chipiona, her family, her first successes in different contests (Sevilla, Jerez, Huelva) and her later departure for Madrid.
From flamenco stages and shows to actress
Rocío worked very hard in the early years of her career to make a place for herself in the artistic world of Madrid. Then came performances in nightclubs and appearances on radio and television programmes. Touring with various artists on stages all over Spain also became a regular part of her life. Recognition as a complete artist came with her acting roles in several films.
The recognition of a star
As a result of the work of previous years, her tenacity and her undoubted innate qualities, Rocío became an internationally recognised artist. Her voice crossed the borders of Spain and Europe to settle in America. Madrid’s Gran Vía was no longer big enough for her and, during those years, her voice helped to raise the impact and value of copla and flamenco.
Rocío, a committed woman
“La Más Grande” was not only an artist. Her human dimension surpassed even her artistic facet. From the beginning she was committed to those who needed her and to the people around her, and she actively fought for the causes she believed in.
A prophet in her homeland
Breaking the cliché, Rocío was indeed a prophet in her own land and proudly carried the name of Chipiona, Cádiz, Andalusia and Spain around the world. The singer proclaimed the name of Chipiona wherever she went and publicly showed her devotion to the Virgin of Regla.
Central area
Dresses, auditorium and awards
In the central area of the exhibition, visitors can see some of the dresses and garments the artist from Chipiona wore at different moments of her career, in a series of scenic spaces that recreate various facets of her life. The collection also has a central auditorium that reinforces the multimedia experience of the visit with a projection dedicated to our illustrious artist. In this same place, a considerable number of the awards and honours the singer won throughout her career are exhibited, alongside photographs of intimate moments between the artist and her friends from the worlds of politics, art and entertainment.

Rocío Mohedano Jurado
Rocío Jurado was born on the 18th of September in Chipiona (Cádiz). Until her death in 2006 and even after, Rocío has been the best ambassador of her home town around the world. From a very young age she began to sing copla at home, and it was Rosario, her mother, who first recognised that this girl had a special talent.
At the age of fourteen she went to Madrid with eight thousand pesetas that her grandfather lent her, and soon began to sweep the “tablaos” of the Gran Vía. “The Awards’ Girl”, who won competitions and fascinated her fellow artists, expanded her repertoire of “tonadillas” with some flamenco styles because she was asked to do so in certain “tablaos” such as El Duende (of Pastora Imperio and Gitanillo de Triana) or Florida Park. From there she soon moved on to television, cinema and world fame.
Rocío was always regarded with special affection from the other side of the pond, where, in addition to her folk songs, her romantic ballads were eagerly awaited. Hispanic-American sounds also influenced her musical career. She was a multidisciplinary and versatile singer whose voice turned anything she sang into gold: copla, flamenco, ballads and even pop-influenced songs.
Behind the great artist there was also a great woman. Brave, bold, committed and ahead of her time, she lived through Spain’s transition from dictatorship to democracy, taking a stand in favour of freedoms and the “mental uncovering” of society. Through the way she dressed and the lyrics of her songs, she championed the liberation of women and of consciousness. Rocío, whose list of awards is endless, holds 150 gold records and 63 platinum records, received the Gold Medal of Fine Arts and the Medal of Merit at Work, and has been considered the Voice of the Millennium.
